Public Safety

Crime is evolving. Gangs are infiltrating our city. Cybercrimes are increasing. Crimes against our most vulnerable populations and break-ins/burglaries occur daily. Not to mention the rise in violent crimes. The southern and central areas of Greensboro, including the area south of downtown and some neighborhoods along W. Market St. are known to be our community's highest crime area. To address public safety concerns, we need to support our law enforcement agencies from the city level up to the federal level. At the city level, we must ensure they have current training and the necessary equipment to do their jobs.  Develop quality working relationships with area agencies. Maintain SROs in our schools year-round. Establish a public safety committee composed of citizens, businesses, schools, colleges, council members, and law enforcement agencies to develop and execute plans for integrating law enforcement into our communities, fostering proactive rather than reactive responses.  The public safety committee could focus on topics such as youth mentoring programs, assessing mental health and drug treatment needs, and evaluating program success rates. How can we involve church and civic leaders, medical professionals, youth sports directors, Scout leaders, and local clubs to increase neighborhood interactions with police?

Violent crime times are typically 7 to 8 minutes. Non-violent crime response times will be a bit longer because they lack the necessary police support: up-to-date training, proper working equipment, and staffing.

Affordable Housing
Taxes

Affordable housing is generally defined as the occupant not spending more than 30% of their earned income on mortgage, rent, utilities, and property taxes. Currently, the average Greensboro resident spends 30% – 50%, and with our annual rising taxes, homeowners and renters are wondering how they are going to keep paying on their homes or keep them. We need to clean up our budgets before increasing taxes. Guilford County as a whole pays higher property taxes than comparable counties in our state, and our county has a significantly lower income bracket.

A significant housing shortage and an affordability crisis

There is a limited supply of commercial properties and practical potential for repurposing existing commercial spaces.

The impact of rising property taxes and interest rates on development costs. 23% of our population is over 60 years of age and growing. More folks are on fixed incomes throughout the city.

Challenges with ordinance enforcement, property management, and aging housing stock. The city faces a need for more housing units to accommodate its growth, but high construction costs and land prices hinder development.

Veterans Hidden Heroes

A Community that supports our Military, Our Veterans, and those who serve alongside them is what it is all about.

Less than one percent of our US population has served. They have fought for the Freedoms we live by today.

As of the RAND Study, Sept. 2024, our Nation currently has around 14.3 million military and veteran caregivers. These caregivers are the spouses, parents, family members, and friends who care for America’s wounded, ill, and injured service members and veterans.

These men and women have signed a blank check that has been cashed. They require assistance starting at a young age.
